The 411 on Poteet Strawberry Festival

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Believe it or not, Poteet, Texas is not just your average small town. This modest municipality right outside of San Antonio is birthplace to Country music megastar, George Strait and annually hosts the Poteet Strawberry Festival, one of the oldest and most popular events in the state of Texas. This event, which will take place from April 9th-11th is also recognized as the largest agricultural festival in the state and one of the most exciting and dynamic festivals in the Southwestern United States.

Although the festival will feature many strawberry-centric events such as strawberry judging and an auction, the festival, will feature more than just strawberries. The event will feature something for everyone, yes, even college students. Nationally known Country and Tejano music stars such as Joe Nichols and Michael Salgado are just a few of the performers that will provide entertainment for attendees of the festival. For those of you interested in sampling culinary delights from throughout the state, The Taste of Texas Food show is the thing for you. Also, in the true Texan spirit, the festival will feature a carnival.

Tickets for daily admission can be purchased online at https://t1.clicknprint.com/tix/SilverStream/Pages/pgIndex.html?siteID=1720. So on the weekend of April 9th-11th, if you are a UTSA student, you should take a break from studying and head on over to the Poteet Strawberry Festival!

Erykah Goes Nude

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Erykah Badu has done it again. The first lady of soul is known for her strong messages and straight forward opinions. She has made a name for herself by going against the crowd and really standing up for what she believes in. Such a fierce personality combined with a powerful voice makes this sensational singer a serious beacon of truth in today’s foggy world. And Erykah has found yet another way to up the standards.

Her newest killer hit is called “Window Seat” and with a name like that you might not expect much. But Erykah has done it big this time. In the video she marches to the very same grassy knoll where JFK was assassinated. The march it’s self is still not enough to cloud the video in controversy, it’s the fact that she does this while stripping of her clothes piece by piece. And the final straw? She does it all in front of a live audience of unsuspecting tourists and locals who look on in shock and perhaps a bit of disgust. It’s a powerful message all in all. She disregards society’s tendancy toward’s group think and sheds the heavy baggage of life. Check out “Window Seat” and the rest of her CD, New Amerykah Part Two, to get a real taste of individualism.

Get Up and Get Movin’

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Within the past few years physical activity has become more popular than ever.  We hear all the time that exercise does the body good, but what exactly does it do for us, and more importantly how does it benefit us?

Exercise increases your health in general, but it also improves your sense of well-being.  A regular exercise routine helps keep us healthy and disease free, while reducing stress, which is extremely beneficial to us as college students who usually have elevated levels of stress.  Physical activity keeps the endorphins pumping, which helps put you in a better mood.  A quick jog or a tennis match could put aggravations and negative thoughts on the back burner and help bring out the positive light.  Lastly, exercise boosts self-confidence, which ultimately decreases cases of mild to moderate depression.

Whatever you do,  don’t let your exercise be another item on your to-do list, that will make it boring and miserable.  Make it a point to exercise at least three times a week for thirty minutes  and remember that exercise will always do your body good !

Today is YOUR Day

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

We all have dreams.  Some are small, short term goals, while some may be in the distant future, but both are just as important, and just as reachable as the other.  Sometimes though, no matter how motivated we are, we can get sidetracked and lose sight of what we really want in life.  Below are a few ways to keep your eye on the prize, and reach your goals.

1.  Set realistic goals.  Don’t just say, “I want to be a millionaire one day.”  Set smaller goals that will eventually get you to your goal.  For instance say, “I want to save $1000 to invest,” or “I want to graduate college with a 3.5 GPA so I have more work options available.”   Setting smaller goals that are challenging and that keep you excited about your ultimate goal.

2.  Write it down.  Write down what you want to achieve, and all of the steps that will help you along the way.  Maybe motivational quotes, or even things others have told you will guide you.  Writing things down so you can look at it will make you be realistic, and realize that goals can’t get reached overnight.

3.  Be Positive.  There are many things that could pose as an obstacle in your path.  DO NOT let it stop you.  Keep you goal centered around positive things, and no matter what always remember to believe in YOU.

Taylor Swift to Perform in Raleigh

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

On May 1st  Taylor Swift is performing in Raleigh at the RBC Center, with a guest appearance by Kellie Pickler.  This past year we have all watched Taylor Swift achieve her dreams and rise to the top right in front of our eyes.  She has sustained her position at the top of the charts, and has received more nominations and awards than most of her older competitors.    Her FEARLESS Tour’s concert in Madison Square Garden sold OUT within 60 seconds, not to mention the entire tour within a few minutes. Regardless of all the fame Taylor has recently achieved, she is able to stay strong and remain “fearless” like her current album.

Taylor says, “To me, fearless isn’t not having fears.  It’s not that you’re not afraid of anything.  I think that being fearless is having a lot of fears, but you jump anyway.”

The quote makes perfect sense coming from such a successful young woman, who literally had to jump head first if she wanted to reach all of her goals.  FEARLESS speaks of the realities of life.  It talks about love, family, friendships, and life in general.  She says that her songs are a part of her that she will never hold back on, and everything in her lyrics is real.

Give it up for Taylor Swift and for her “fearlessness” to reach her dreams, and enjoy the amazing performance!
