Mascot Possibilities Down to Five

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

The University of Mississippi says almost 13,100 alumni, season-ticket holders, students and others have voted to narrow down the list of possible replacements for Colonel Reb. The replacement of Colonel Reb comes after the image was retired 7 years ago as Ole Miss continues its move away from Old South symbols.

While Ole Miss sports teams will still be called the Rebels, an new animal or human character is being pursued. The Ole Miss Mascot Selection Committee says the list has been narrowed down to five choices: horse, land shark, Hotty and Toddy, lion and bear. The school’s signature cheer is “Hotty Toddy;” the committee says the phrase could be embodied by a couple of Muppet-like characters. If they make it to the next poll, the Ole Miss family will have a chance to see and vote on the graphic depictions for the pair.

“Obviously the goal is to find out what everybody wants,” said committee member, Ty New. “This is a student led process, but we also want to hear everybody’s opinion whether it’s an alumni, ticket holder, or of course all the students.” The committee plans to conduct several focus groups on campus, and will hold more in the coming weeks across Mississippi.

Phoenix Takes the Stage in Minneapolis

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Students in Minneapolis are in for a nice summer treat, because Grammy Award-winning alternative rock band, Phoenix, is coming to the State Theater on Thursday, August 12, 2010.

The French group draws elements from their eclectic ’80s background to arrive at a fusion of rock and synthesizers. They got their start touring the French bar circuit doing Hank Williams and Prince covers; two years later the band adopted the name Phoenix and pushed 500 copies of a single on its own label, Ghettoblaster. Phoenix had their mainstream breakthrough with the critically acclaimed album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (2009). In January of this year, they were awarded a Grammy for the Best Alternative Music Album and are continuing their celebration across the country, hitting venues like Madison Square Garden, Banaroo, and the Lollapaloosa Festival.

You don’t want to miss this award winning group. Tickets start at a reasonable $35 and can be purchased at www.Ticketmaster.com.

On-Campus Smoking Ban

Monday, July 19th, 2010

Effective August 1st, smoking on any state-supported institution of higher education in Arkansas, including UALR, will be a violation of Arkansas law. The Arkansas General Assembly passed the Clean Air on Campus Act last year to protect students, employees, and visitors from second-hand smoke exposure on public college and university campuses. The penalty for violating the law is a fine between $100-$500. The law prohibits smoking tobacco or “other lighted combustible plant material” anywhere on campus, including buildings, grounds, and parking lots.

UALR enacted its own Smoke-Free Campus Policy last fall that announced: “The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is a smoke-free campus. This policy applies to all locations of the University, including the main campus, the William H. Bowen School of Law, and the UALR Benton Center. All individuals are expected to comply with this policy. Persons who fail to comply are subject to disciplinary action. “(Chancellor’s Office, August 16, 2009)

University Health Services has designed a program to help student, faculty, and staff smokers. “The program includes individualized assessments, treatment plans, and support for individuals seeking assistance. The program has already helped an overwhelming number of people quit smoking,” said Marie Sandusky, director of the Office of Health Services.
