Time Management 101

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

One of the most essential skills that a student can practice throughout the semester: is effective time management. Juggling priorities will definitely be a complex task but it’s all part of the college experience.

All students have or will eventually encounter the following situation: choosing whether to party on the weekend or study for an upcoming exam. Ultimately, the choice is yours. Partying will allow you to meet new friends and have a good time, but your grades will most likely slip. Studying will boost your grades, but you’ll have to sacrifice “fun” time for it. Believe it or not, you can study and party if you abide by the following time-balancing tips:

1. Write a schedule - Simply writing a schedule of planned daily activities in a notebook or a planner will give you an added sense of organization and will encourage you to stay on the right track

2. Prioritize - What’s more important? Partying, working out, school, your job, something else? Determine what is most significant and go from there.

3. Set Goals - Without setting goals, there is nothing to strive for. Whether it’s something as simple as getting to work on time or something as big as finishing the term with a 4.0, goals are an excellent motivator.

Live by these tips and you will be living the Smart Student way! Good luck with finals and next semester!

Give Thanks All Year Long

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time of year. It gives us a break from our hectic school and work schedules and gives us a chance to spend quality time with our family and close friends. Thanksgiving is a time where we can really take a look at our lives and see what we have to be thankful for.

Friends, family, a job, a beautiful apartment at Lafayette Place and an education are some of the things you can name when going around the dinner table. Get creative! Knock on the door of your neighbors or invite over some friends for a late lavish feast before you start decorating for Christmas! Suggest that each person bring something for the buffet table and keep track so people don’t bring the same thing! This also works in work settings.

Decorate your apartment at Lafayette Place in beautiful fall colors to get in the spirit. Thanksgiving should be more than just one simple day out of a whole year. Strive to practice Thanksgiving on a daily basis! Being appreciative of what you do have instead of focusing on what you don’t have is an essential key to happiness.
