Water: A Key Component of Good Health

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

It’s no secret that water is good for you. Everyone from fitness gurus to doctors stress the importance of drinking plenty of water each day for good health. But with drinks like soda, juice, coffee, and energy drinks heavily advertised and readily available, it’s very easy to not drink any water at all. The following are some reasons to drink H2O.

1. Water keeps skin looking great - Staying properly hydrated removes all toxins that build up in your skin and prevents it from drying out.

2. It’s inexpensive - Studies have shown that tap water is usually as clean and safe as bottled water and it obviously costs a whole lot less. If you don’t like the taste of your tap water, you can purchase a filter which will end up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

3. No sugar - While fruit juices may contain a few nutrients, they also contain a vast amount of sugar. This sudden burst of sugar triggers your insulin response and makes you tired and sluggish. Sugary sodas will produce the same reaction and the usually contain no nutrients at all.

These are just a few of the many reasons to decrease soda and juice intake and increase water intake. If you’re a loyal soda or juice drinker, try drinking a little more water each day. The results will be amazing!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

In American culture, sometimes organic food gets a bad rap. This is surprising because most American’s try all sorts of diet crazes and workout fads, but never go for the basic fixes, eating right.

“Organic foods are those that are produced using environmentally sound methods that do not involve modern synthetic inputs such as pesticides and chemical fertilizers, or chemical food additives. For the vast majority of human history, agriculture can be described as “organic”. Only during the 20th century was a large supply of new synthetic chemicals introduced to the food supply. The organic farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialization of agriculture known as the Green Revolution.

Organic food production is a heavily regulated industry, distinct from private gardening. Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Japan and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification in order to market food as “organic” within their borders.”

You can get these types of ingredients at your local farmers market. Fort Wayne’s Main Street Farmers Market is open until October 21st from 3 pm until 8pm. Find fruits, vegetables, baked goods, vendors of local artists and live music. Do not settle for less than a modern experience when grocery shopping!
