Recent Graduate? Soon to come? Read on…

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

If you’re a recent graduate or graduating in the next few years, this is
important information to know. Post graduation, finding your first real
job is going to be top priority on your “List of Things to do.” However,
what’s a good way to market yourself above all the other competition out
there?

1.      Be willing to meet people. Don’t be afraid to go out to job
fairs, shake a few hands, and introduce a face with a name. Don’t know
if your dream company is hiring? Call them up! Ask if you can come in or
if they have any positions you can start at. You will never know if you
don’t ask.
2.      Be likeable. Say for example you land an interview. Walk in the
interview being the best liked person on the planet. Smile & say thank
you. For example, in an interview, an applicant was perfectly qualified
with every skilled needed. When asked interview questions, the candidate
rolled their eyes and said “These interview questions are so typical.”
The company went with the second best qualified person.
3.      Accept rejection. You are not going to get an interview with
every dream job you come across. Walk into each interview with a fresh
mind and outlook. There is someone who is more qualified than you as
well as less qualified. Keep looking and the perfect opportunity will
fall into your lap.

Three Easy Ways To Go Green!

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

These days, environmental conservation is more important than ever. Many say that going green is too costly, but there are several ways to do your part in protecting the environment and saving yourself a few bucks in the process:

1. Unplug the charger of chargeable appliances - When you aren’t currently charging your cell phone or laptop, unplug the charger. According to Future Forests, only 5% of the power drawn by cell phone chargers is actually used to charge phones. The other 95% is wasted when you leave it plugged into the wall, but not into your phone.

2. Turn off your lights if you don’t need them - Save yourself a few dollars by flipping that light switch off when there’s adequate light in your place or if you’re currently not in the room in which the light switch is flipped on. You may be enjoying yourself in an extremely comfortable position on your couch, but get up during that commercial break, turn off the lights, and think about the money that you’ll be saving. You’ll also be doing your part in going green.

3. When you aren’t home, raise the temperature of your air conditioner- Why leave the air conditioner on a really low temperature when you aren’t home? In warmer regions, Air Conditioning can account for 60-70% of your electric bill. Crank the temperature up by a few degrees when you’re out and about and you’ll see a noticeable difference in your energy bill.

Follow these Smart Student Living tips, and you’ll be well on your way to going green and saving green!
