What’s Google+?

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Will you be joining Google’s latest craze?  Basically, Google+ for dummies is an attempt to combine Facebook’s wall, Twitter’s tagging, FourSquare’s location tools and combine into one sharing tool where you can even attached pictures. You can keep up with you friends more easily with all the perks of all social networks combined into one!

For example, if you wanted to let a few friends know you were at the local ice cream shop, you could use Google+ to attach your location, tag specific friends from a Circle (another Google+ feature), and upload a picture of double scoop of Chunky Monkey all in one post. You can check out the Demo anytime. Everything is new and updated and this could be the next big “Facebook.”

Will you give it a shot?

The Importance of Hand Washing

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

You’ve been told to do so ever since you were a child, but just how important is washing your hands? Believe it or not, regular hand washing is one of the most essential factors for maintaining good health and that’s why it’s important to know the significance of hand washing.

Everyone (especially college students) comes in contact with germs and bacteria in their daily life. These dangerous microorganisms are present everywhere on places such as door knobs, faucets, light switches, railings, etc. We touch these things during the school day without much consideration and with the same hands touch our faces, eyes, noses, and the food we eat. While performing these acts, the germs and bacteria get into the body with the potential to cause several diseases.

The following times are when it is extremely important to wash your hands:

- After using the restroom at home or at any public place.

- After visiting a patient at the hospital.

- Before and after eating and/or cooking (especially meat, fish, and poultry).

- After touching pets

- Before touching young infants and children.

- After collecting and throwing out garbage.

- After sneezing, coughing and blowing your nose.

If soap is not available an excellent and affordable alternative is hand sanitizer. Many sicknesses can be prevented each year by more frequent hand washing. So get to it, and you’ll definitely reap the benefits of better health.

The 411 on Credit Cards

Friday, March 23rd, 2012

As a college student, you most likely have been exposed to credit cards, either through personal use or on-campus marketing by a credit card company. According to a group’s research, 76% of students say credit cards have been marketed to them through tables set up on or near college campuses and nearly a third of these students have been offered a free gift to sign up. T-shirts were the most common gift given, but students also received Frisbees, candy, pizza, and even iPods to fill out a credit card application.

Banks specifically target the student demographic because they have few financial ties. They compete to provide students with credit cards in hopes that students will come back to the banks when they need mortgages and car loans. Many students pay for tuition and/or purchase books with their credit cards. In 2004, the average undergraduate student had $2,169 in credit card debt.

Establishing credit during the college years is definitely a good thing, however irresponsible spending is not. Making well-planned financial decisions is an excellent choice that will ensure long-term success while recklessly using a credit card to buy anything and everything will lead to bad credit and long-term financial turmoil. The bottom line is, credit cards are what you make them. Spend wisely and make your payments on time, and you’ll have a bright financial future!

If you can classify your potential expenses into these two categories, then you’ll naturally be a more disciplined spender. However, if you feel the need to spend some money, the following tips will help.

1. Clip/print coupons - Coupons are one of the oldest and most efficient ways to save money on whatever you buy. These days many coupons are located online which makes things much easier.

2. Use websites to find great deals - www.slickdeals.net provides a daily listing of discounts from a wide variety of online retailers and each day, www.woot.com features one heavily discounted item from Air mattresses to digital cameras.

3.  Ask for student discounts - Student discounts are located anywhere from movie theaters to restaurants to concerts. How do you find out about them? Ask the establishment directly, call them, or go to their website.
